This is the place where the majority of the warbird (aircraft that have survived military service) discussions will take place. Specialized forums may be added in the new future

I'm taking a business trip to Seoul and Pusan Korea in two weeks I wanted to know if there are any spots worth seeing? I've heard of a Stang on Stick but not much else.
Cheers,
Patrick

i think there is an air museum in Seoul. You should be able to find it on google.

There is the War Memorial in Seoul:
You'll have to cut and paste this address, as I couldn't figure out how to hyperlink the entire thing, including the parenthesis:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_Memorial_(Seoul)
I went there a long time ago, after it just opened up. They have a nice collection of aircraft indoors, including a Mustang, and various jets from the Korean war era and later. It's a first class museum and pretty awesome! There is a "battle experience" room, where they simulate one of the ground battles from the '50-'53 war. It's a room, complete with everything sensory related to war, including the smell of gunpowder.
Don't pass up on this museum, as it is first class and well worth seeing!

A looong time ago on Cheju Island there was a little airstrip. I doubt you can get on it, but it was a japanese airstrip from WWII. I've brough tth esubject up here before and reieved stone silence, but if you can sneak out there you'll be shocked at what you find. If it's still there

About 1/3 of the island is in high resolution satellite imagery on Google earth. So where is this strip on the island?
Mon Aug 11, 2008 11:47 pm
Not sure, dude. But it;'s the old Japanese strip we took over after the war, and I'm pretty sure you can see the bunkers from the air. I believe there were two strips on Cheju, it would be the smaller one I think. Google Earth it
looking to try and figure it out

I did. There is an international airport there with planes on the runway but I have no idea where the other strip might be. If I had an extra 12 hours I might be able to find it, but I don't.

I THINK it was the one to the east of the mountain, but I can't figure out what the hell I'm lloking at. Not really good at satelite imagery, but there are two runways, one large and one skinny and short. The short one was the old Japanese runway, we added the bigger one later. SOME damned where near there (I think it was downslope of the mountain) where sevreal old bunkres. And in those bunkers...I dunno what the hell they were. A single engine plane like a zero with a single float pushed up against it, engine on the ground, plane on oil barrels. And the other bunkers had zero looking birds in them, again, in disrepair, the engine on the ground in front. But they looked doable to me. The koreans are pretty anti Japanese so if you walked up witha pictur of them they'd still deney it, but they were there in 94. I'm certain of that.
EDIT
to the SE end of the little runway there is a building. What is that at the bottoim right of the building? Could it be?

take THAT WIXER's! Now somebody needs to fly their ass over tehre and find my planes!
Only I got the runway wrong. It was near Jeju airport evidently. The old runway is gone and I thought it had been taken over by the US afte rthe war. The bunkers are to the east of it. I remember being closer to the mountain that that, but wtf. Been a while.

Patrick,
There are a number of interesting places to visit in Seoul. Below you can find an edited extract of the relevant entries from my book "World Military Out of Service". Apologies for the formatting which will not come out correctly.

Guys,
Thanks for all the posts. Assuming I have some spare time, it will be a lot fun finding these aircraft.

And if you make a trip up north, be sure to visit the US Navy's only captured warship- the USS Pueblo, which was captured in 1968(Hijacked) and is still carried on USN rolls- and listed as home ported in Pyongyang, NK. It is a museum there...
Robbie
(Just to clarify- I am not advocating North Korean tourism! Just pointing out we have a ship there... We should get it back before we take them off the terrorist list!)
