Thought I'd post a few photos from the road as we prepare for Thunder. The crew started by washing the bombers and did some wiping on the 51. It rained for a bit today which helped with the rinsing...I will post more tomorrow from the arrival. If we don't get out of Battle Creek by 1 oclock we will have to wait until after 3. We are really looking forward to a great weekend! We are bummed the 25 won't be there but that is the way the ball bounces. (engine is not done yet)

Arrival day. I rode with Mark Henley in the Mustang today...we tore up some Michigan air today...it was one of my most memorable Mustang flights ever. Shot mostly video but did take some stills. Flew formation with both bombers and arrived in formation with the 17...pretty cool day!

Awesome pictures!

The P-51 has a different type of canopy than most of the others I have seen. Was that done at the factory or is it aftermarket? Are there many out there like that? Thanks.

Awesome photo thread Jim! A few questions for you:

1) Do you work for Collings full time? If not, how do you afford the time/expense of going home after each airshow? That's got to be very costly in both money and personal time.

2) How long until you get checked out on the P-51?

3) I noticed you entitled the P-51 as "dataplate" on the picture. Does this mean Collings is "coming around"? Are they going to admit to more than 1 B-24 flying? *tongue-in-cheek, this is not a dig at Collings* :D :D

That is a two seat version of the B/C model. It is rooted in historical precedent, though, as they modified the single seaters out in the field like that on the wartime front.

That's the only two seat, dual control B/C Mustang flying. There are some other two seaters out there, but they are not dual control.

More from Saturday. Taigh lowered the ball turret on the 24 and Jeremy opened the bombay doors for the flybys. It must have looked really cool from the ground. Mark Henley did a great acro routine in Betty Jane...looking forward to today.
