Well, in pen and ink, it's called stippling, but it's essentially the same thing. It's actually me at a loss for what to do. I had wanted to depict the terrain showing through the break in the clouds, but I couldn't figure out a way to do it that wouldn't compete with the foreground art. I considered an ink wash, but any time you add water to an ink drawing, you take your chances, and I wasn't feeling that brave.

This has been a chronic problem for me doing aerial backgrounds in ink. The only way I've seen very light tones created in ink is with a wash (which scares me) or with stippling (which I utterly lack the patience for), so I'm trying to brainstorm another technique, but so far this is the best approach I've worked out.

The more I learn, the more I respect the masters...

BTW, while working on this, I had a totally pavlovian moment when I started looking frantically for an undo button. Nothing like real media to keep you honest...it's like flying a real plane after spending all your time in a simulator :-)
