Ultimate Vet's Day Warbird Formation?

Sun Jul 27, 2008 1:26 pm

Listening to the opening of the race at Indy minutes ago, it made me think. NASCAR holds the Phoenix Race on this weekend and it would be great to see a WARBIRD flyover of this race instead of a modern military flyover. I know that they use the military for most flyovers due to the free status, but I want to imagine what it would be like to have a flyover of some of the planes that are the basis for why we celebrate this day. Even though Veteran's Day was based on Armistice Day of WWI, it is most often used to honor those who are still around from WWII. I think the following would be appropriate to salute them in 2010 -

In a Wide "V" formation -

Lead - "Fifi"
Right Wing - "Witchcraft" / Left Wing - "Ol' 927"
2nd Right - "Aluminum Overcast" / 2nd Left - "Nine-O-Nine"
3rd Right - "Texas Raiders" / 3rd Left - "Liberty Bell"
4th Right - "Tondelayo" / 4th Left - "Pacific Prowler"
5th Right - "Yellow Rose" / 5th Left - "Doolittle Raider"

The point - show solidarity in the warbird community by having representatives of all the major warbird groups (Collings, CAF, EAA, and a few private groups) in a mass fly-by showing some of the the bombers that helped win the war.

I had toyed with a fighter diamond or "V" within the Bomber formation, but there are too many good fighters to be represented, so it's very difficult to select who to represent the various groups without having to expand it into a 30 plane fly-by. :)

Opinions/thoughts/additions?

Sounds great! But since we're including Fifi, don't forget Weeks' Marauder..shouldn't be that much trouble to get her flying again. While we're at it, throw in a nice stock WWII Invader. Maybe even a Harpoon. Speaking of Navy bombers, will the LSFM Privateer be flying by then?
