TOM Lodging Suggestion Question

Mon Aug 04, 2008 10:09 am

I'm making my first trip to TOM. I've actually scored a photo pit pass for Sunday so I'm really looking forward to that. Does anyone have any recommendations for the best place/area to stay? I've never been in the area before and didn't want to end up in a marginal area. I don't need 5 star but I don't want a "roach motel" :)

Also, I was able to swing a couple of extra days in the area. I thought that I'd hit the Henry Ford museums. Are there any other recommendations? Is it worth it to drive out to Kalamzoo?

Thanks for any help.

I would try Canton if it isn't to booked up. A little crowded but nice and right down the street.

Staying by the Detroit Airport (Comfort Inn, and many others) puts you right at the end of the runway, super for shooting airliners when you're not at Willow Run. It's only about 10 miles from Willow Run, and is a good area, convenient and not pricey.

Super 8 in Canton, MI (where we're staying) is showing availability at $55.50 per night.

That is not bad Mudge. Catherine and I are at the Red Roof right in Belleville and the price tag is close to $100 a night. I think they realize there is a big event on that weekend. ;-)

As for aviation things to see, your first stop should always be the Locator...

Thanks guys!

I was able to find a room at the Sheraton near the airport. I had a bunch of points from business travel so I was able to get a significant discount. Not quite $55 a night (more like $65) but it ended up bringing the total way down.

Now I just have to decide whether to drive out to Kalamazoo on Friday. I'm going to hit the Henry Ford Museum on Thursday as I get in to town around 8am. Decisions, decisions!

I was just out at the Air Zoo 2 weeks ago, bought a membership.

Very nice museum, lots of interactive activities and a great place to bring the kids...they wont get bored.
