I've always thought it was interesting the way the shadow of an aircraft always seems to be surrounded by a sort of halo. I thought maybe it was an optical illusion, but it seems to show up pretty well in the photos.

It's caused by sun diffusion off the glass and reflection off chrome (or natural metal) surfaces of the aircraft. As you note in the B-24 pictures, the "halo" concentrates around the nose, where the sun is diffusing through the various windows. If you go outside on a sunny day and hold a chromed object out, its shadow will show the same effect.

There is an interesting halo effect when looking at the shadow of the aircraft you are in passing along the ground...an effect that is not there when you see the shadow of a different aircraft.

Don't know why that is, though.

That's what I was referring too..like you say, I've never seen the effect unless I was flying in the aircraft casting the shadow.

Is that a Ju188 in the 4th photo?

It doesn't appear to have the extended wingtips of the 188. Judging by the camouflage scheme, I'd say it's a Ju-88C or Ju-88G nightfighter (hard to tell which without the tail.) Same with the wing seen in the final photo.

I'd say the aircraft in the center of the 4th photo is quite likely a Ju-188.

The top picture of the "close-ups" shows a Ju-88G and FW-190 Mistel (piggyback) on the right.

The bottom pic shows a Ju-188, minus engines.
