hello all
I have volunteered to compile the list of what aircraft types are needed and who's building which ones for Gary's CAF 1/72 scale hangar project, so here it is.
For anyone wanting to volunteer to supply a model, just respond to this thread with the details and I will update the list as fast as I can with a
CONFIRMED in the status field of the type in question.
My apologies if I have made any errors or omissions, please let me know if I have and I'll get them sorted asap.
Please ship finished models to:
Commemorative Air Force
ATTN: Gary Austin
9600 Wright Drive
Midland, TX 79711
thanks!
greg v.
P.S. For those who missed the original thread, here is the link:
http://warbirdinformationexchange.org/p ... hp?t=18358
and a paraphrase of Gary's needs:
"To help us with the planning of where to put various aircraft in our hangar when they come in for rotation, maintenance, post-Airsho stays, or whatever, I'm thinking about making a 1/72 scale hangar floor mock-up here in our office area with little 1/72 scale models of our fleet placed in the same way in which we'd stack the hangar. This would help us quite a bit when it came to reorganizing for the frequent hangar events or just daily activity that goes on here at the CAF main hangar in Midland.
Anyway, all I need is some very basic models that are 1/72 scale. Nothing fancy, just flat black painted airplanes is all we need as far as details go. I'll need at least one of each type airplane we operate, and two of some of our multiple types(I can submit a list of those airplanes if there is any interest in this project from y'all). If anyone is interested in helping me with this project, please feel free to e-mail me or respond with a post here on WIX. I will need to coordinate with each person that helps so that we don't end up with 200 B-29 models and only one of a Stearman. And remember, any donation made to the CAF is tax deductable."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
All models to be 1/72 scale, built gear down, finished overall matte black. All superficial details (antennae, rigging, ordnance) should be omitted.

Whats this all about??????
I do happen to have a vaccume form kit of a N3N in 1/72 that I never built. I will see if I can find it.
Why matte black???? this gonna be like a map for the CAF???

sorry N3Njeff, I should have included a link to the original thread; here it is:
http://warbirdinformationexchange.org/p ... hp?t=18358
it is the thread entitled "Attention bored model builders...."
Have a read and let me know if you're in!
cheers
greg v.
P.S. I've adjusted my first post above to contain a bit more info as well...

thanks I found the thread. let me ask my dad if there still there. I had 2 kits that i bought long ago but I wanted to do a vaccuform as practice before I attempted it. I know he built one and made it a diorama on floats on the Severn river. came out pretty neat.
If not, I will keep and eye out on ebay, there on there every now and again.

does anyone remember offhand if that old matchbox helldiver had folding wings? i'm starting to think it did which would be a great help.
Wed Jan 09, 2008 7:25 pm
and if it comes down to it i'll give the L-5 a try.

I found this regarding the Matchbox SB2C-1 Helldiver, kit PK-104:
"Steps 3 through 6 are the assembly of the folding wings. These pivot in approximately the proper place and work on a ‘pull out’ type of arrangement. You have to pull the tips out slightly to fold them and when folded down are pushed in to give a surprisingly flush fit. If assembled correctly the folding wings work well."

So sounds like you are in luck!
I had a thought on the Sea Fury wing folds, if you are interested: cut the wings where the fold is and then simply glue a small hinge flat to the top surface, straddling the joint. If the wings exhibit a tendency to "droop" when extended, a small tab can be glued to the underside of the joint on the inboard stubs to act as a stop.
What do you think?
And can I mark you down as "confirmed" on the B-24, A-26, Sea Fury & L-4? Or do you want to mull it over for a while?
cheers

Cool. So both versions of the Helldiver are covered then.

Ha! That's the exact idea I had too! It doesn't have to look pretty as long as it works.

I can do the F6F Hellcat with extended wings if its still available to do
Wed Jan 09, 2008 9:54 pm
I'm game. I'll sign up for...
C-47
P-47
TBM (wings extended)
Wed Jan 09, 2008 9:59 pm
Ack, I thought this had been 86ed. I'm glad you posted this here since I don't look in the model forum very often. I am still game for the P-39.
Wed Jan 09, 2008 10:23 pm
excellent guys, thanks.
-Jesse C., I've got you confirmed on the Hellcat, with extended wings
-TBDude, I've got you down for the C-47, P-47, and the TBM with extended wings.
-MX304, I've got you penned in for the P-39; are you still game for the AT-6/SNJ, or should I list it as available? Either way is cool.
-Spooky the cat, I've got you confirmed on the Helldive w/ practical (working) wing fold, and the Sea Fury; are you still considering the others?
thanks!
