Last Minute Geneseo Road Trip Planning

I am leaving for Geneseo this afternoon on a winding road trip. I will be passing through Bath, NY early tomorrow morning. I have an AH-1 noted in the Locator at a Legion there, but no confirmed location...

Does anyone know the location? I'll even take tips, hints, etc.

I have been past that chopper many times. The same road has the Glenn Curtiss museum... With a C-46 outside. It is just down the road from the legion hall where the hellicopter is.

If you are on 86/17 and exit at Bath, just follow north to the Rt 54 signs. It's a left at the center of town. Then Stay right and follow 54. You will see the AH-1 on the right. If you follow on up to hammondsport, thats where the Curtiss museum is.

If you come from the north, Just find 54 southbound. It's on the east side of Keuka Lake... from Penn Yan.

I like the museum because it has 25+ aircraft engines and some of the old planes flown on the frozen lake. Plus the motorcycles! The 3/4 P-40 does nothing for me, but it's a cool little plane

Keep an eye open for grass strips. There are some cool old planes in the crappy shedds on some of them. I found a T-6 project in one many years back, up near Dundee.

I'm heading for Geneseo tomorrow. Should be there on the 11th and 12th.

I am looking for it using GE. As 54 bends to the right (north-east) I should be looking for it on the right. Is it on the right before what appears to be a cemetary or after?

...You can use the map to get coordinates. Just zoom in, click the Satellite button then right click on the location.

If you are driving to the Curtis Museum, it is off a side road don't expect a freeway, but if you are on the correct road just keep going. Before you come to Curtis, on the left, right next to the road is a grass strip used by a crop duster. There are a couple of old sheds or barn type hangars with a few old planes. It is a pretty small valley, hard to imagine any early aviation there, especially with the bad winters, but I think Curtiss did his initial flying off the lake. The sign for the Museum is on the left, is prominent enough, and the building is only a few hundred yard off the road. If you get to the lake you've gone a few miles past it.
I don't know what an AH-1 is. If it is a helicopter I may have seen it and not really noticed. I may have seen a nat guard or armory bldg in the village you pass through., not sure what was there.

Mike, That is a very cool locator. I found the AH-1 at:

or at least I think that's it. It's in the right spot. quite a bit past the cemetary. The marker is pretty far south of where the chopper really is.

It's on a white cement pad just off the "horseshoe drive" that looks like a "D".

I know it's up on a rise that makes it easy to see. and the pad is in the correct relationship to the building.

I know you'll find it now.

Mike, Now you got me hooked on the locator...

the Glenn Curtiss museum is at 42.398615, -77.233114. left side of road.

the sat photo is blurry but you can see the black building. when you drive up, you won't miss the C-46 out front.

My cottage is at 42.449555, -77.098618 or at least that's close. It's on waneta lake.

I won't spend much time there this weekend cause we'll be at Cornell -taking my daughter there for a summer class.

Music to my ears (or to my eyes in this case). I have been having a hard time getting it noticed. To people like you and I who like road trips and warbirds it is an invaluable tool. At the Geneseo air show ask me about the new trip planning feature I am working on.

You will see it updated now. Before the marker was dark red indicating it was only an educated guess. It is bright green now...

BTW... An AH-1 is a Bell Cobra, the attack helicopter sometimes known as the Huey Cobra. The Iroquois, or Huey, is the UH-1.
