I believe the Tomcat that was used as Maverick's is now on display on one of the carrier museums. Ice man's F-14 crashed while in service.

I saw the movie Top Gun once; that was enough for me.
I hated that movie. Horrible.
Pearl Harbor ranks up there too as very bad.

I won't go into Pearl harbor, but Top Gun was a fun movie. Accurate, not really, but it was fun. It's a great flick. If you want to see a documentary check out the History channel.

Ah, yes. Top Gun. The movie where Tom Cruise says everything twice. Everything twice.

"I'm on him, I'm on him!"

"I'm firing, I'm firing!"

"Eject, Eject!"

Yeah that Kate doesnt need any maintenance at all!

TOP GUN, was fun I'll agree with mustangdriver. Especially if you see it when you are a kid. Plus its a really good dvd to watch if you have a good home theater system!

Some little known facts about Top Gun

THe accident where Goose is killed was written into the script after the technical advisor who was a real Top Gun instructor described an accident where a friend was killed in that exact way.

The 'Hit the brakes and he will fly right by trick was tried after the movie by pilots, and it is known as the "Maverick"

The scene where Maverick kisses Charlie in the street was not supposed to happen, he forgot his lines, and just kissed her instead. ( I need to remember that when I do a movie with Jessica Simpson"

In order to get the correct lighting for some shots the director wrote a check to get the carrier to turn around.

Actual Top Gun pilots are seen through out the film in background

The class room in that hangar was funny, because Top Gun had just built a new state of the art classroom that they were proud of, and the film makers said that instead they would just shoot a classroom setting in the hangar.

The actors actually flew in the F-14's for some time.

The U.S. Navy allowed an F-14 to fire one missile for the movie. Knowing this the movie studio shot it from as many angles as possible, and used it over and over again in the dogfight scene. THe Navy had a court hearing to find out if more than one had been fired due to the many shots.

How many pilots fly jet air combat or any other jet fighter flying with the O2 mask dangling off to one side? Kid fun, yes but not very realistic.

Give me the Tomcats in "The Final Countdown" any day. Sci Fi story, but well done with minimal special effects - and a great way to document that slice of carrier ops and paint schemes in naval aviation history - I feel the same way about "The Bridges at Toko-Ri". I wish someone would film another aviation movie with real planes and few computerized add-ins.

We need to have "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" starring the C-130 crews of Iraq & Afghanistan!
