Airfest 2008…June 22, 2008
Airfest is the Edmonton areas premier aviation event, celebrating our aviation heritage and promoting aviation in general.
Started in 1999 to celebrate the completion of the Edmonton Aviation Heritage Societies renovated parking area and the mounting of the CF-101 Voodoo on Kingsway avenue it has been a successful event on Edmonton’s Festival list for a decade. Attendance has fluctuated from highs of well over 15,000 to weather affected lows of 3-4000.
In 2006 Airfest took on the challenge of preparing for the 100th anniversary of flight in Canada coming in 2009. Since then it has been rejuvenated with new featured added each year. 2007 brought in the Young Eagles program and a visiting World War Two P-51 Mustang aircraft as well as the Mustang (car) Owners Club and attendance reaching 7,000 persons.
2008 makes a quantum leap in programming with the addition of the first Combi Concert.
The Combi Concert is a Rock and Roll musical production staged for the first time ever from a Boeing 737 Cargo/Passenger jet. Featuring renowned Edmonton Rock artists our City is first once again in aviation.
A series of Canadian Armed Forces aircraft will be joining the presentation as well as a guest World War Two B-25 Mitchell bomber. Add in the other 30+ aircraft scheduled to attend and Airfest 2008 promises to be the biggest event yet.
Other special features include:
Historic Vehicle Troop of Armored Vehicles and Tanks
Southern Alberta Light Horse Armored vehicle and equipment
Edmonton Street Rod Association
Land Rover Club of Alberta
Even with adding these all new attractions Airfest remains dedicated to being affordable to the Edmonton area families, admission is only $5.00 per person and children under 6 are free.
Our goals this year are simple:
- Promote Aviation and Edmonton’s aviation history
- Promote Edmonton’s arts/culture and heritage to the community
