Warbird Information Exchange

I find this period of allied aviation very interesting. I have read and found a few stories of this period fascinating. Anyone have photos of airfields, aircraft, etc. of this time early in the war? (Philippines) .... also very interested in allied air operations that took place early in the war against Japan from Australia. I know much of the history, but have seen very few photos of this time period. .... I know it's not aviation related per say, but the USS Langley was sunk early on as well and I find this story interesting as well. Any photos or good stories?

their are a good number of pics available....... all ground pounding material. just to my knowledge not pre-ww 2 u.s aviation wise. it was a forgotten 2nd front even before hostilities began. i know their are plenty of aviation myths, such as the jerry rigged p-40, colin kelly's saga etc, but i don't believe their is alot in actual black & white. i would be delighted to be proved wrong otherwise, but i think i've seen it all by now.

Hellcat, Two very good books I would recommend on this time period would be Corregidor, by Belote and Corregidor,The End Of the Line by Morris. Neither really deal with the aviation part of the war but very good reading. I go to Corregidor once a year a very interesting place covered with history. If you get really hooked on the Philippines I'll get you lots more info. You can find some bits of info at these websites

You may have already read this but it is a good one worth mentioning again.

The book is 'Doomed At The Start', subtitled 'American Pursuit Pilots in the Phillippines, 1941-1942. Author is William Bartsch.

There are a few pictues in the book. There is one of Buzz Wagner's P-35A and some stuff like that. I enjoyed it immensely as I'm also very interested in that early part of WW2. I had a college buddy whose dad survived the death march. My dad was stationed there in the 50's and I have always been interested in the subject.

The Air Corps. in the PI is my favorite topic. I went there in 2002 with some Bataan vets, several of whom were former 17th PS enlisted men. They had some interesting stories about Wagner.

Here are a couple of references for you.

1. There is a fantastic book called Fortress Against the Sun by Salaecker. Much of the book deals with B-17 ops in the early days of 1942. Great stories while operating out of Java and Australia. As you may well know the B-17 was removed from the Pacific theater by 1943 (along with the B-26 Marauders).

2. Visit the following link www.adf-serials.com then select NEI Aircraft , then select NEI in Australia . A lot of good info here as well as many fuzzy photos of Martin B-10's, Japanese marked A-20, P-40, DC-5 et.al. Oh, yes for the the non-believer a crisp photo of a USAAF Brewster Buffalo. There is a wealth of info here on this Aussie website.
