If I recall, this engine was a candidate for the B-36, but according to one book I read, P&W politics played a role in getting the R-4360 instead.

So, one was delivered to the Army and it was "dumped." So it either was scrapped or buried in a hole somewhere.

Lycoming actually built two engines. One was delivered to the Army, and then subsequently "dumped". The other was retained by Lycoming and is the one on display at Udvar-Hazy.

I think that "P&W politics" had less to do with the demise of the engine than its abysmal reliability.

Yes, that's a big one. But it is a pup compared to these radials.....
Real Big Radials

Scroll down to the duplex 56 cylinder model....yes, 112 cylinders.

Neat engine Kenlyco, off of a TU-95? This whole post was because someone said they liked radial engines and the bigger the better.

You do know the basic difference between an airline Captain and a turbine engine don't you?

One way or the other, when you get to the gate you can make the turbine stop whining- :P :P [/i]
