Very interesting Jerry.

The Hurricane L1851 YO-U prang was probably:

"F/L V.B.Corbett a Canadian from No 1 (R.C.A.F.) Squadron damaged his Hurricane I (L1851) at Hornchurch during a scramble on the 18th of August 1940 when he ran into a fuel bowser at 14:40hrs." (From www.the-battle-of-britain.co.uk). With such an early serial this one may have had, at least when built, the fabric-covered wings, 2-blade prop, and no ventral fin. Looks like it was retrofitted with at least the 3-blade prop, the later rudder, and at least part of the ventral fin; I wonder if the part behind the tailwheel was never fitted or fell off in the accident.

Hate to be picky, but in August 1940 the unit name was still No. 1 (F) Squadron, RCAF. It didn't become 401 Squadron until March 1941. 18 August 1940 is generally recorded as the date the unit first became operational.

Thanks for the info guys.
These are from a friend who was a Battle of Britain pilot in the RCAF.
He got one kill on Sept. 15, 1940, a Dornier I belive. He passed away a few yaers ago, but was kind enough to let me copy some of his photos.
I knew he was in 401 SQ, but I didn't know all the early details about the SQ changes. I've got a few more that I'll psot as I get some time.
