Steve Birdsal came up with the serial and also what happened to her. This has been a debate that has gone on for some time.Check B-17 news at Aerovintage.

The bottom photo of the B-17B Mary Ann has been published (in color) before:

Page 155: WWII AMERICAN WAR EAGLES 1937-1942 by Warren M. Bodie

And

Page 33: BOMBER COMMAND by Jeffery L. Ethell

The top photo posted by Jack shows the B-17B Mary Ann in Washington D.C. (note the Capital Dome near the landing gear); a photo from the same shoot can be seen on page 155 of WWII AMERICAN WAR EAGLES 1937-1942 by Warren M. Bodie.

Also, in reference to the aerovintage speculation that the Mary Ann might be 38-583, photos of this airplane can be found on an AAF Form No. 14 Aircraft Accident Report:
B-17B # 38-583, Call # 46265, October 7, 1943, Accident # 63.
My guess: Mary Ann = B-17B#38-558 (also speculated on the same website).
TonyM.

I see a sailboat in the first picture where the Capitol is visible, too, so I presume that must be National Airport (now Reagan National).

Hmmm... Maybe a tetrahedron or some kind of antenna rather than a sailboat?
