Carl was T-6 lead at Oshkosh, as well as being on the board of directors of EAA Warbirds of America, and a life member of the CAF, charter member AZ Wing of the CAF, and one of the founders of the FAST comittee.
Carl restored his T-6 over the course of 3 years, and flew it for over 1500hrs. In the years he owned N2757G, only 2 others had ever flown it solo, Bill Wahl, who checked Carl out on the T-6, and Bob Mitchell, his friend and wingman in the Cactus Squadron. there were only 3 names who signed off annuals or any repairs on N2757G, Gab Gabraski, Carl Schmieder, and myself. Carl Helped me to get my A&P, and IA, and I had help to restore N2757G. I would work on Sentimental Journey on Saturdays, and 57G on Sundays and I had taken alot of parts home to paint strip, so I was working on it some almost everyday.

I flew as Carl's backseater at Oshosh from 92-98, where we lead 60+ T-6s during the Warbird show.

I met the Cactus Squadron at the Air Races I was covering in Aurora Co in 1990. I remember Carl well. I was sad to hear about his crash.

Matt, two memories I have of Carl was of one year at the formation clinic at Kenosha I needed to renew my low level aerobatic card and Carl drove over to an abandoned drag strip near there to watch me do the maneuvers. I also remember when we had the Spitfire reunion in the Phoenix area and the night party at Carefree airport and Carl taking off in the dark about 10pm with the big flame of exhaust coming out of the T-6 stack. A good guy, one we miss.

Bill,
you should see that flame from inside the plane the flame would light up the whole inboard end of the wing as well as the pitot tube mast . Carl and I flew at night several times, once to Midland the year the B-26 went in. We landed at Midland around 0130, only to find out the hotel had given away our guaranteed room.

another time we were trying to make it to Garden City, Ks to catch up with the other T-6s that had left earlier in the day. We were surronded with clouds full of flashes in front and to both sides. We ended up landing in Clayton, NM, in driving rain and heavy wind. That was a interesting night. We ended up sleeping in the terminal, and sometime during the night, the room started to flood. I picked up my boots and jacket off the floor and threw them into a large potted plant, and went back to sleep. Carl had a bit harder time going back to sleep as he found out the room was flooding by planting both feet in the water, which at that time was about 6inches deep. I guess it is hard to go back to sleep once you planted your feet in freezing water.
