Greetings
I have a ? and by no means am I trying to stir it up . When a plane is restored at the NMUSAF and is deemed restored. Is their a engine start up to see if it could be flown ? I know in some cases that another engine mght be placed in as a Substatute for cosmedics looks and never could be . I guess my ? is If stated that it has been restored is it or just good looking ? ...............in advance Thank you for all that respond.

My understanding is that the AFM uses airworthy components that could be used to keep flyable aircraft in the air.

I was in Dayton last October and asked the same question. I was told that any usable components were taken from the plane before it was put on display. This seemed to be mostly engines and cockpit items. Some of the WWII aircraft are complete, like Shoo Shoo Baby, Strawberry Bit** and some others, but most of the jets are "gutted". The XB-70 still had the engines as I was told that that engine was only used on the XB-70 and therefore wasn't usable anywhere else.
Shoo Shoo Baby and Strawberry B, the P-51D and some of the other prop planes flew into WP to be put on display, so I would guess that they could be made flyable once again.
