Hey guys

got this photo from a friend of mine, the pilot and owner (then) Max Vogelsang, a great guy and great pilot - he owned "Double Trouble Two" [N51EA] for 10 years and was a regular attendee at many airshows throughout Europe.

This photo is of a hazardous crosswind-landing at an airshow in 2002 at Hilzingen (Hahnweide) Germany.

On touch-down on the grass runway, he was caught in a severe cross-wind situation and this is the result - he managed to put the a/c down safely and no damage was found in a thorough inspection afterwards...

but he said himself - that day things could have been different and only his vast experience as aerobatic and test-pilot and keeping cool made the difference....

So the nickname of the a/c didn't prove right, right ?

Indeed - but we now have two (remember the confusion that caused in September Jerry). Maybe time for a scheme change?

Maybe one could lose the "Too" and be retro marked in the earlier "Double Trouble" scheme?

Maybe Valdo or Bill will help with this but isn't that a lot of flaps for a strong cross wind landing? We use flaps 20 and a speed of Ref and 20 in the Hawker.....

Back in the mid 1990s, I was in the right seat of a Cessna 172 landing at Addison when the same kind of thing happened. A crosswind gust came from between the rows of hangars and caught us just as the mains touched the pavement. The right wing came up and we went bouncing across the runway on one wheel! We just about got into the runway lights before my buddy in the left seat could get the wings leveled and all three wheels down onto the runway. We just about needed a change of undies!

That was a pretty scary experience in that rented "spam can". I can't imagine what it would feel like in a $2M-plus vintage fighter! The pilot is to be commended for avoiding what could have been a very nasty end to that dangerous situation.

Watch those crosswind landings. . .
