Pilot suffers minor injuries in Hampshire plane crash
From Staff Reports
Cumberland Times-News
A Romney pilot was treated at a local hospital for minor injuries after his newly restored 1942 Stinson (SIC) bi-plane crashed shortly after takeoff from an airstrip along South Branch River Road at approximately 1:30 p.m. Sunday, according to the Hampshire County Sheriff’s Office.
The plane, piloted by Kent Shanholtz and also occupied by passenger Dennis Caruso, Saint Mary’s, Pa., clipped several trees south of the Riverside Mulch Plant before coming to rest over an embankment in a grove of trees, according to police reports.
Caruso was not injured; Shanholtz was taken to Hampshire Memorial Hospital where he was released later that afternoon.
Cpl. Jamie Carter and Deputy Wes Frame of the Hampshire County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene. Romney Volunteer Fire Company was also on scene to assist with a fuel spill that occurred as a result of the crash.
The Federal Aviation Administration was contacted and will be conducting an investigation.
Hope the pilot is OK and can get the plane back in the air!
