The one thing I haven't noticed is anybody on WIX suggesting that the latest incident down at Galveston might not be the best financial development for the Lone Star Flight Museum.

As a sign of goodwill from the Commemorative Air Force- Gulf Coast Wing
I am sending a donation to get the Hurricane back into the air as soon as possible to:
The Lone Star Flight Museum
P.O. Box 3099
Galveston, TX 77552-0099

Those folks have been awfully good to THE TEXAS RAIDERS and we wish them fair tailwinds... BOTH DIRECTIONS!!! :D :D :D

Don,

While I certainly applaud your intentions, I think most are holding back until we find out what happened (i.e. the investigation is completed) and whether or not the accident is going to be covered by insurance is known. I know that many are hesitant to make claims on aircraft like this due to the prospect of having the coverage subsequently cancelled or the premiums skyrocketing, but I think until the entire situation is known and we either get a request for help from LSFM or it becomes evident that it's going to be out-of-pocket for either or both parties involved, I think it's a bit premature to start any fundraising drives for either aircraft involved.

There is probably a good amount of expense that will fall between the cracks on ANY amount of insurance LSFM has on the Hurricane.

I don't need an FAA/NTSB investigation to tell me that this not good for an organization I support, respect and admire.

True this is a wholly non-LSFM "blessed" suggestion.
They can ask me to stop and I will relay to Scott to pull the post.

Until then...

The FAA should be concluding it's investigation and they should have a determination of fault real soon. If I was a betting man, I would bet the LSFM Insurance isn't going to go up and their hurricane will be repaired like new.

Considering the way in which Robert Waltrip uses his Gulfstreams, I wouldn't worry too much about whether or not the Hurricane repair will be funded.

The LSFM is a great organization, but there are many other warbird groups out there that are more in need of private donations to stay solvent, including several championed by various WIX members.

Don - As I said, I don't have any issue with your initiative. I just think most are waiting to see what's needed before making any move. As was said above, the FAA & NTSB investigations should be fairly short as there are no injuries or fatalities involved, so there's not as much red tape to wade through before issuing the report. Once that comes out, then everyone can talk about what happened, what will happen, and what's needed, so everyone can coordinate to make sure everything happens.

Well, I would like to respectfully submit that speculators on either side let the investigators do their jobs, stop making guesses EITHER WAY, and save their opining until then.

A few folks on this board were there, and I haven't seen THEM speculate, so I'd think it'd be easy enough for all us non-witnesses to hold off as well.

I must say that I'm repulsed by the idea that anyone would revel in another's misery, and I think it's completely within the original intent of this board to exercise a bit of restraint.

I fullheartedly agree. This is a deeply painful experience for everyone involved. I'm sure there is enough grief for both pilots and those close to them without any of us kicking them. How about we try to show the same respect we would show ANY pilot who broke his ride? Does it really matter in this forum at this time who did what? Bill's one of us and petty feelings aside, his pride and joy is bent, as is the hurricane. In my book that's tragedy enough. Bill, get your Spit up again so I can drive down to Sacremento for your next show there! :D

I got a brief moment to meet Trae or Elroy at GLS. He was a blur of motion, working hard. I notice he looks a little like Russell Crow. Always interesting to see WIX members in person.

FAA conclusions can often be vague and might only be one of the opinions presented in court if it gets to that point.

If there were to be a lawsuit, the FAA opinion would only be one of pehaps many presented.

We also don't know if either aircraft had liability insurance, let alone hull coverage.

Before anyone jumps to conclusions with respect to fault, it might be valuable to look at two accidents with similar characteristics:

http://www.ntsb.gov/ntsb/brief.asp?ev_id=20001214X40769&key=1

http://www.ntsb.gov/ntsb/brief.asp?ev_id=20070801X01080&key=1

I would be interested in knowing what procedure was briefed that day with respect to landings and aircraft separation.

There is a very good chance it is going to end up in court... It has nothing to do with the pilots. The insurance companies will battle to determine fault and protect their intrests. The Hurricane is realitivly simple to repair compaired to the spitfire because minimal systems damage

I used to really get behind the FAA and NTSB findings of crashes, and then the whole FLight 800 thing happened, and now not so much.
