Warbird Information Exchange

I was just wondering if any axis aircraft are on display in allied markings, ie: something like a Me-109 with roundels, to represent a captured aircraft. I tried searcing online but couldn't seem to find anything. Just curious.

I think a Zero in U.S. markings would be neat to see.

The Flying Heritage Collection had the unrestored remains of a Zero on display a few years ago. Looking closely, one could make out the star in the area of the hinomaru. I forget the story on the particular bird and unfortunately don't have a picture available.

I've seen too many airplanes destroyed by the term "Static Restoration."

I have a 190 painted in captured US markings..............................its 1/72 though. I cobbled this one together after the markings in the kit disintegrated.

Painted up as it looked when captured and operated by the 404th FG

it would be a different / unique twist for a museum display!!

Captured aircraft were often brought back to the USA and test flown with US markings- and always with a readily identifiable US aircraft escort...

Didn't help the Akutan Zero, which got chewed up by a taxiing aircraft later in the war.

I would have thought that the Smithsonian at least would have had something, something that came over for testing and was never repainted.

Something like that sure would draw some attention at an airshow eh?

At the start of WW twice, the British government along with the RAF siezed all the Bf-108 TAIFUNs held by the British Messerschmitt distributor and pressed them into courier service inside the British Isle. They were earth and green over BRIGHT yellow undersides exactly like trainers or prototypes and all given roundels and MoD serial #'s, and there were quite a number of them-

IWM in London displayed a partial Zero in its RAF evaluation paint. Don't know if it is still there.
