D-M 2008 Heritage Conference
Greg Anders sprays his father, Maj. Gen. (Ret.) Bill Anders with the fire hose after completing his last flying mission in a P-51 Mustang during the Heritage Conference at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona on March 7, 2008. General Anders was at D-M to make the conference his last flying experience. With tradition after a pilot has finished their flying status a person sprays them with a fire hose and their career is honored. MG Anders was an astronaut on Apollo 8 which was the first person to have left Earth orbit and traveled the moon. Also, MG Anders is the President for the Heritage Flight Museum. The conference is held at D-M every March to train new and old pilots and their teams for the up coming air show season. (US Air Force photo by Senior Airman Jacqueline Hawkins)

I'm sure it was just his last flight as a Heritage pilot.

Yes, he only retired from the Heritage Flight program.

Apollo 8- first trip around the moon, Bill Anders was supposed to be the the LEM pilot but ended up service module tender, with Jim Lovell as navigator, and Frank Borman the Mission Commander.

First manned trip to the moon- to orbit a few times and head home. Lovell go to go back, for a rest stop visit, but had a bit of a problem- you may recall Apollo 13...

To Bill Anders- "Well Done" on a great career...
