Tue Apr 01, 2008 11:28 pm

Greetigs
I have been watching the Movie Hamburger Hill ( Wow Really Bloody) I was wondring how many differnt type of Aircraft that were their in support .
I have cousin that was in the middle of it all ! Remembered that F-4's and Puff was their . What dose the Term Snake and Nape mean ? is that what is in reference to a Napalm drop ? My cousin bearly ever talks about it . Would like to know of all Aircraft that were their .
After seeing this movie I have a idea of just how bad it must of been and what it is like for our Fighting men and women of today's Arm Service to put them selve in Harm way .
God Bless em all

I believe Snakes refer to the Mark 82 "Snakeye" bombs used, and Nape would be short for a napalm drop.

snakes are helocopter gunships, fellas. Slats are a reference to the old huey's with their landing skids.

Sorry, but while "Snake" may be a name for a Cobra Helicopter ....

The term "Snake and Nape" together refer to the MK82 and Napalm combination.............................

Agreed, in the context of the movie which is being discussed, "Snakes and Napes" is speaking of the use of MK-82 Snakeyes and Napalm by either F-4 Phantoms, F-105 'Thuds', or A-1 Skyraiders in the close support role. If I remember the movie correctly, the pass in question was made by an F-4.

BTW, I wish that more directors would have the guts to show the reality of war and gunfights. While I don't think that what one sees on the screen really has that much affect on the behaviour of a person, I do believe that the public at large needs to be reminded at least occasionally that the "video game" that we see on TV going on overseas really doesn't have a reset button and those guys who are serving or have served in combat saw some pretty nasty stuff. That's why I liked the Miami Vice movie, Band of Brothers, Thin Red Line, Saving Private Ryan, Letters from Iwo Jima, We Were Soldiers, and Hamburger Hill among others that show what battle really looks like, including the results of people getting hit by a round or bomb really looks like.

My bad. Wasn't thinking of it that way, but you're right of course. They were talking about load out and not what birds were flying aircover, although I remember at least one snake making a firing pass over the GI's and killing some of them. so there! *sticks out tongue and runs*

Not knowing the context I hope I might be forgiven for my opinion.

If the the speaker were an airforce type then snake and nape might be the type of weapon.

Army types ( like yours truely, being a huey crewchief) would think of Cobra when hearing about "snakes" and Nape would be "nape of the earth" . A type of low level flying used by snakes, slicks and hogs.

Not knowing the context I hope I can be forgiven an opinion.

Airforce types might think weapons loadout when talking about snake and nape.

Army types ( like yours truely, a Huey Crewchief), would think "Cobra" when hearing "Snake" and "nape of the earth" when hearing Nape. A particular form of low level flying common to snakes, slicks, and hogs.

Cuts down on the AAA dwell time, dont ya know.
