In the newspaper the other day there was a photo of the carrier USS JFK being towed up the Delaware River to its designated storage area. This got me thinking, what are the other retired carriers currently in storage? I know about the Forrestal but what are the other ones? Are there any definate plans to scrap/sink any of them? I dont imagine too many being turned into museums because of their size and all the problems of maintaining such large vessels.

USS Forrestal (CV-59) -- Newport, RI -- Baltimore preservation effort failed -- reportedly to be sunk as artifical reef
USS Saratoga (CV-60) -- Newport, RI -- On donation hold -- active museum effort underway in Rhode Island (though severly hampered by sinking of their other display vessel, Russian submarine Juliet 484, last year)
USS Ranger (CV-61) -- Bremerton, WA -- On donation hold -- active museum effort underway in to preserve the ship somewhere in the Pacific Northwest)
USS Independence (CV-62) -- Bremerton, WA -- planned to be dismantled within 5 years
USS Constellation (CV-64) -- Bremerton, WA -- planned to be dismantled within 5 years
USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67) -- Philadelphia, PA -- In reserve

USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63) is scheduled for decommisioning this summer (2008)

Amazing to think that the US has more aircraft carriers in reserve than any other country keeps active.

it is strange to see a few of those I remember on active duty while I was in the Nav.

It will be stranger to see the Sh-tty Kitty decom'd as I spent many-a-month on her.

I just got back from Hawaii, and went to Pearl Harbor. How cool would it be to have a carrier on display there.
