"In 1974 a Douglas SBD-4 Dauntless was brought to the surface by the trawler Atlantic Lindsey, after her net got tangled in the wreck about 20 miles southeast of Marystown on the Burin Peninsula. It was brought to the US Naval Station, where it was examined and photographed, before being disposed of at the landfill. Positive identification was made by the label NAVY 10744, which was emblazoned on both sides of the stabilizer.

Preserved in the dump is what you meant to write, correct?

Hmmm, does that Buno # have any historical significance?

LCDR George Klinsmann CO VB-42. The SBD crashed on take-off from the USS Ranger at night on July 24, 1943. CDR Klinsmann was later CAG 4 and KIA in the SWP flying a F6F.

It is better off in the dump than in the hands of some dastardly vintage aircraft collector.

Tongue firmly in cheek. :P

NHC, saving America's heritage from Americans one plane at a time.

In 1974 the written U. S. Naval policy was that all lost Naval aircraft from WWII were officially abandoned. At some later date the Naval Historical Center (NHC) decided that STRICKEN did not in fact mean the same as previous abandoned, and thus they could claim to oversee and preserve the Naval historical aircraft. Thereby creating more staff and greater budget, with the end result being that the NHC has written so many absurd policies and requirements that no agency, group or individual can economically recover any ABANDONED naval aircraft since, what is it, 1996? Not very effective. They will no doubt claim to be underfunded! When the planes are gone to scraping and the elements who will be accountable? No one?

262CREW,

About 30 years ago I contacted a Congressman on one of the civil aviation boards to inquire at the Pentagon. Even then, he claimed that the Navy would not allow any recoveries of the buried German and Allied planes there.

So many opportunities and still no admission of policy failures. The NHC simply added more bad policies.
