I was watching the history channel today also and saw something interesting. During a show about the life and times of Howard Hughes, they of course had a large portion of film on the H-4 Spruce Goose. One of their 'factoids" before breaking for a commercial stated that many of the design features of the H-4 were later incorporated into the design and thought process of the Japanese Zero!
I just a dumb ol' ex-gyrene, can anyone explain to me what a Zero and the Spruce Goose had in common?!! :?
I guess his XF-11 must have been the inspiration for the P-38 and P-61!

They said that his H-1 racer was the basis for the Zero.

They also described the XF-11 as having "counter-rotating" props.
Yeah, they WERE counter-rotating. The outer left-side prop was rotating "counter" to the outer right side prop and the inner left-side prop was rotating
counter to the inner right side prop. The outer props on the respective sides were "contra-rotating" to the inners on the same side.
Right? Tell me I'm right. You know I'm right. Huh?

Mudge the educable

Actually Mudge they got that right.
The original XF-11 that crashed had conter (contra) rotating props.
One side failed and blanked out the lift on one wing causing the crash.
The rebuily XF-11 had standard props.

personally I think he had a prop governor problem that caused a flat blade or perhaps more than one, turning the propellers into gigantic speed brakes. The more power you added the worse the condition got. IMHO of course !

Jack...Understand that I was up past my bedtime.

Let me try to 'splain it.

What I meant to say, in my quite convoluted post was:

Each engine had "contra-rotating" props.

OR:

The outer prop on the left side and the inner prop on the right side were turning the same direction. The outer prop on the on the right side and the inner prop on the left side were turning in the same direction.
That's the best I can do.

What the h-e-l-l...I understand it.

Mudge the obtuse :hide:

ps. HIC!

So Mudge, you mean that the whirlly-gigs on one side are spinning different directions to the other whirlly-gig on that same side, as the whirlly-gigs on the otherside of the plane are spinning in different directions to the other whirlly-gig on that side while at the same time the whirlly-gigs are spinning opposite to the whirlly-gigs on the other side of the plane? Hell man, why didn't you say so?

The history channel is more of the "future channel" now. Whats up with all the UFO stuff and the whole "mega disasters" thing? Ok, so those shows might be cool for some people, but it is the HISTORY CHANNEL. Too bad the Military Channel didn't pick up both Mail Call and Dogfights.

I did see a new series that starts tomorrow on the History Channel that looks like Dogfights, except it is the whole navel battle.
