A-7E VA-37 buddy tanks a KA-6D of VA-75 flown by CDR Wernan and CDR Boye over the Med 1978.

The photo was taken from an A-6, not an A-7. The A-7 has a retractable refueling probe on the right side of the fuselage. The A-6's probe sticks up from the center of the nose, in front of the windshield. The cameraman is sitting in the right seat of the A-6.

Cheers!

Looks like a practice plug to me. A-7 only has the Buddy Stores and one drop tank that I can make out. Pretty darn light load even a recovery tanker mission.

When the ready tanker went down a A-7E was launched has a back-up.
When my step-dad and CDR Wernan lauched they drained the A-7 who RTBed. This was he first A-6 flight off the Saratoga. I have (or had the whole sequence).

"Up and up jets off the pointy end, that is our business", as my last Maintenance Officer used to say. It was even better when they came back the same way!!!!
