Colours show how the fuel travels from the different fuel tanks once ruptured. I think it was just dye added to the contents of the fuel tanks.

IIRC, it is a fair bit older than the 80s too. I believe the test was to see what damage the various poles would cause to an aeroplane.

Cheers,
Matt

Most likely colored water to see fuel spray patterns.

That was to test a additive to prevent fuel flash fires. It was one of several that took place at Deervalley airport, in Phx, Az. The hill is still there, it is on the SE corner of the airport.

But if the tests resulted in improved crash survivability for people in future accidents, it wasn't a waste at all.

1649A N7307C used by the Flight Safety Foundation to provide the FAA with data to assist in reducing the hazards of take-off and landing accidents. It was to look at factors affecting passenger survival and evacuation, as well as impact fire. Destroyed on Sep. 3, 1964 at Deer Valley, AZ.

They also used a DC-7 in a test (That was the one in Airplane if I'm not mistaken). That film is also on Youtube I think. I remember seeing both crashes in a documentary on either Natl. Geographic or Discovery.

P: Noise coming from under instrument panel. Sounds like a midget pounding on something with a hammer.

S: Took hammer away from midget.

I remember seeing pix of one of those in LIFE magazine or something when it happened. (telling my age). I can't remember which one it was but I do remember the a/c overrunning the runway and piling up on a mound of dirt of something. At the time I thought it must have cost somebody a lot of money to do that.

This film of the Connie's destruction was used in the film "Airplane" back in 1980.

Hmm, this reminds me of the video I saw a long time ago with a B-66 Destroyer getting "destroyed" by running it into a wall of some sort... Does anyone have that video or remember the one I'm talking about?
