Warbird Information Exchange

Well we have decided to let the world finally know that the P-40 that Bob Diemert once owned was not built by him, but yet by an amazing man by the name of Granger Taylor. Granger took multiple planes that were left over from the war and built, what look like, an amazing P-40. So its time to settle the stories about Bob Diemert and show you all what the P-40 looked like, and what it was made of. I remember reading about this plane in an Air Classics or Warbirds International, and had always wanted to see more pictures of it and the construction of it. Isn't this one now in Minot, ND?

If I remember correctly, didn't it have the fuselage and wings of a P-40, the tail feathers of a Bolingbroke and Harvard, and the engine off a Lanc or something?

I finally found a source for P-40 cockpit photos. What a nice website! And what a great story of your grandpa. What I loved most was to see all the cockpit stencils. I had no idea of what was written in most of them. Would it be too much if I asked you for more? Please! Pretty please?

Hi Glenn,

Were you aware that the wings on Granger's "P-40" are/were the original wings/center section off your Grandpa's P-40 that were cut-off? My Dad traded him those to Granger for a pile of P-40 parts that Granger had. The interesting thing was that there was absolutely nothing left inside the center section of those wings when Granger got them and my Dad had always wondered what Deimert was using to hold the landing gear in the wing. Granger never intended to make it a flyer and he started out with just a cockpit section that he had found in a junkyard. Everything aft of the cockpit section was gone and that's why he had the Bolingbrook tail on it. I understand that Granger was quite a character.

Years and years ago, somone told me that Granger Taylor believed in space aliens landing on earth and that he feared being taken a prisoner by them. He then disappeared, and several years later the remains of his body were located near what was said to be a dynamite explosion? Any truth to this story?

Granger had left his wallet and things behind with a note saying that he was going into outer space and would return in three years...Granger's mother called my Dad three years after this asking if he had seen Granger because the three years had passed and she was hoping he was back......... His truck (toyota I think) was later found smashed and blown into oblivion from the Jato bottles (or something) that he had strapped to it to blast himself into outer space.

Notice that it's a Merlin engine on the "P-40" in the photo.

Is this where the infamous Darwin Award about the man blasting himself into the side of a cliff after strapping JATO bottles to his car came from? I had always thought that that was an urban myth. Please tell us more!

I've always believed that it was Granger that the Darwin award was referring to.....but I have no way of knowing for sure and I don't personally know anybody who saw the wreckage.
