On May 2, 1951, VA-195 Skyraiders, making precise low level runs, delivered aerial torpedoes on the heavily defended and strategically positioned Hwa Chon Dam in North Korea. Destruction of the dam had been attempted by Air Force and Navy bombers but was finally accomplished by VA-195earning them the nickname Dambusters.

the mention of the the painting depicting this mission, also states that the navy used simular plywood break away torpedo fins that the japanese fashioned on their torpedos for pearl harbor. the dam waters in korea were as shallow as pearl's.

Marv Quaid was one of the pilots on that raid and gave a talk on it at OSH a couple of years ago.

Hi all
New guy here. I have been lurking for months. It was great to meet some of you at Geneseo last year.
Check out the web site for the Fighter Factory. Their AD is painted as a VA-195 aircraft.

Rick

Two of us Fighter Factory types were just discussing this photo just this past weekend. For historical accuracy...

Firstly, Harold "Swede" Carlsons airplane was "501". Swede took this photo of his wingman, Robert Bennett, flying "506"

Anyone notice the loose cowling piece at the carburetor intake?

Bob Bennett made mention of this carb intake dilemma to one of the Fighter Factory guys in describing the mission at OSH in '01

Here is an excerpt from Bob Bennetts email dated 1/21/08 regarding this same photo and the carb intake problem.

Quote:

"Yup, that’s me on the way to the Hwachon Dam on 1May 1951. I was flying Skipper Swede Carlson’s wing and he took the picture. Seem to remember going off to make a couple of close air support straffing runs after dropping the torpedo but carb air scoop cover was really lifting so knocked it off and went back to the boat.
Palm Springs is only a couple of hour’s drive from us in San Diego so hope we could work something out in Sept.
Would love to see your new facility. We might be back that way in Oct.
Bob"

I'll have to fix the caption on my photo which I got from a retired NA who flew with Carlson in VC-11 in WWII and also flew ADs in VC-35 in korea.
