Hello, A friend of mines brother was in the 46th bombardment squadron from july 1942 to april 22 1943. He went missing on the date of April 22 1943. Fred M. Speake crashed off the coast of california. I am just wandering what type of airplane might he had flown? If anyone had a pic of Hammer field in this time period? Things like that. Thank you for your help.

I found this on the 41st Bomb Group website,

During the following year, in March 1943, the 46th was reassigned, and in October the 820th took its place in the Group. Thus the Group consisted of the 47th, 48th, 396th, and 820th Bombardment Squadrons.

I can't find anything about Speake in the 820th, maybe he stayed with the 46th which was re-numbered when re-assigned? The dates are close Mar-Apr 43.??

Regards,
Mike

This was part of the 479th Anti-Submarine Group. Assigned to Britain mid 1943. Can't find much on Stateside duty.
