Mohawk built for speed?

Came across this picture on a modeling forum I frequent. No information was posted concerning the picture. Anybody know something about it? Quite an interesting modification!

Never seen that before. Looks like jet pods from a Neptune. By the way, copy and paste worked for me

According to ov-1mohawk.org, it was used by the Pittsburgh Institute Of Aeronautics. It is currently at the American Wings Air Museum at the Anoka Airport in Minnesota. Here's a picture I took of it last year: http://bp3.blogger.com/_yPSOvv7LA_I/Rfx ... /OV-1A.jpg

It was at P.I.A. when I went there in 1981-82, sans jet pods.
I believe the jets were a class project later on, P2V Neptune pods IIRC, not sure if they ever ran or not. Getting glassy eyed A&P's ready for the "glory of aviation".

When we went to fire up the props the plane leaked fuel like a sieve. They gave up on that idea, at least while I was there.

Regards,
Mike
