Probalbly a staged photoshot. May not even be the actually aircraft he flew when he scored the victory

He could have chased the enemy until he ran out of gas. That took place a good bit out there.

No, it was staged. Thompson got cleaned up and cooled off and had his picture taken later that day.
I've got a bunch more of the 45th FS P-40Ns on Baker Island. Note that the stencils were taped over
before the sand was applied to the upper surfaces.
