Need Help With F9F Cougar Accident

Thu Dec 27, 2007 2:06 pm

I saw this video over at Airshowbuzz.com. It's of a accident where a Grumman Cougar comes in for a landing, slides down the length of the deck and careens off the starboard side bow.

I'm wanting to try and find out what happened and if the pilot survived.

http://www.airshowbuzz.com/videos/view.php?v=e3af0983

Information I can gather from the video:

-F9F Cougar either a -6, -7, or -8

-Modex looks like "209" or "208"

-Navy not Marine Cougar

-BuNo. appears to be 141095 or somthing close to that. Incidently according to JB's site BuNo. 141030-141229 were F9F-8 Cougar production. So the BuNo. seems to be in the ball park.

- Tail Code is V

I wasn't able to see any indentifing clues to the carrier this was filmed aboard.

What I did come up with is, it is possible this was a VF-113 bird aboard the USS Essex CVA-9. On the WestPac delpoyment from 16 JUL 1956 to 26 JAN 1957 as a part of CVG-11 - CVA-9 the VF-113 did carry the tail code "V" and did fly the -8 Cougars (F9F-8B).

Anybody know anything or see some other clues?

Thanks

Found this:

http://www.gonavy.jp/CVG-CVG11.html

It shows that the Modex for VF-113 was the 300 series. VF-112 was the 200 modex series and also flew F9F-8Bs.

So possibly this is a VF-112 Squadron bird.
