Wasn't that the Bolt with the Chrysler engine in it? A real pain the tushy if I remeber correctly.

XP-47H was the one that had the Hemi. :shock:

No, this is an experimental high-speed interceptor with an R-4360. The second prototype had contra-props.

The experimental XP-47H was powered with an invertered Chrysler V-16.

The New England Air Museum has one of the very few inverted Chrysler V-16 engines tha powered the XP-47H on display.
It is a massive S.O.B.!

With the 6 blade contra-rotating prop, the big beast did 490 mph !
And had a take off rate of climb that would make your eyes water - from sea level to 15,000 feet in 3 1/2 minutes.
Not bad for something that weighed in at almost 6 tons.

Does anybody know how much of the XP-72 was common with the production Thunderbolts?
It looks like a lot, but then again, the P-51H and P-82 were of totally new construction, though similar in appearence.

I'm pretty sure that the XP-72s were standard airframes pulled off the assembly line early and then sent to the Prototype Shops.
