Another Air Show long ago...

Wed Dec 19, 2007 2:44 am

A little quiz, or at least a matter of curiosity...

I went to an airshow a while back. Lousy weather kept the crowds away, but lousy weather does sometimes make for neat pictures. So we have lousy weather and a very interesting collection of active duty warplanes.

So can any of you markings maniacs out there figure out from what's visible here just when these shots would have been taken?

Definitely 1970s anyone can guess that- its before 1979 as all F-100 ANG were retired then.

The F106/TA-4J, F-101 and HH-53C in SEA colour is definetly mid 70s i guess by the F14 in high hgih viz.

Man oh Man wish i had been born in the earlier years that is COLOURFUl as warbirds, today a boring grey grey grey as the clouds.

I would say its a MAC base. Its in the flatlands, I'll say Calif. Possibly McClellan or Mather AFB. 74 or 75.

Pretty good guesses. This open house was at Beale AFB in May 1977, just about 30 years ago.

I actually remember that weekend very well! I had a rather hot young lady friend up in Nevada City back then, and I had never seen an SR-71 or a U-2. I thus got several needs filled with one trip. I also remember missing a large deer by inches at 90 mph plus on some little two lane highway going back up to the Lady's place on Saturday evening after the open house. Of course I got very little sleep that weekend and was a basket case at work the next week, but what memories! (And some memorable photographs too).

VF-1 Wolfpack was the first F-14 squadron followed by VF-2 Bounty Hunters.
