[PICS] Keesler Field etc., 1947, part 6 of 6

PART 6 OF 6

VOUGHT

Image

One day a flight of Naval Reserve Corsairs visited Keesler, something Dick thought worthy of several photos. But from where? Anyone know what the tailcode "VF" stood for? It isn't in any of the directories I've checked.

The final aircraft was completely unmarked except for US insignia.

VULTEE

Surplus BT-13 NC55027 bearing the logo of "CAS". Don't know who they were, but they also flew Cessna T-50s with similar markings.

WACO

Image

Waco NC57825 was a ZQC-6 model. Wacos were always deluxe airplanes, not something you saw every day. This one obviously was with a commercial operator, and must have been based close to New Orleans if it could truly make it to Grand Isle in 30 minutes. There is a latter-day Waco today with this N-number, pictured on the National Waco Club's site:

http://www.nationalwacoclub.com/c6album ... 16586.html

The caption says that this isn't this Waco's original number, but it could have acquired the new one before 1947. It looks like it could be the same airplane. However, this is clearly not a new photo and N57825 has since been reassigned to a Mooney, so who knows what happened to this aircraft.

And with that, we conclude this presentation. I hope you've enjoyed it and can enlighten me on some of the missing information. Any other comments are always appreciated.

Here's a list of Naval Air Reserve Station Codes that I have.

Anacostia..........A
Akron................L
Atlanta..............B
Birmingham.......T
Columbus..........C
Dallas................D
Denver...............P
Glenview............V
Grosse Isle.........I
Jacksonville.........F
Los Alamitos........L
Memphis.............M
Miami.................H
Minneapolis.........E
New Orleans........X
New York.............R
Niagra Falls..........H
Norfolk................S
Oakland...............F
Olathe.................K
Seatlle.................T
South Weymouth..Z
Spokane..............N
St. Louis..............U
Willow Grove.......W

I'm guessing the second letter in the tail markings "VF" stood for Fighter (Glenview Fighter).

I have pictures of an Oakland NAS Corsair which is marked FF (Oakland Fighter). Not sure if Jacksonville was F also?

I have noticed that at some point they went with just a single letter tail code, but then the Air Stations name and Orange Band is usually painted on the fuselage.

Mike
