There are a handful of photos floating around showing USAF A-1Es with the skull and crossbones as seen here. Can anyone confirm this was specific to the 602 ACS? Also, most photos from the 1st and 602nd ACS show the airplanes designated with a number on the cowl. (eg. Bernie Fishers' airplane) Any idea why some, like this, use a letter?

Other USAF A-1 trivia - did any squadrons besides the 1st & 602nd fly the airplane in the grey scheme (excluding Hurlburt)?

Finally, to see this tail number when she was brand new (to the USAF) as well as other shots which appear to have been taken the same day see these links:

Is it my imagination or is there an outline from a "2" removed and replaced by the "B"?

Disimilar, yes. But, they worked well together.
