10 SC Nominal Size

Mon Dec 10, 2007 2:41 pm

What size does 10 SC equal? A customer asked if 10 SC equals 10 X 4 1/2 and I don't know. If not, what is the proper nominal size on a 10 SC tire? Thanks,

I don't know if there is an equivalent. Often the design of the landing gear components for a tire wheel tire that has a teardrop cross section means the modern shape tires won't fit as they are more square or round. Also the rim size will not match up in sizing.
The 10" is the OD and SC is Smooth Contour.
Check Desser Tire for something.
Other consideration is whether it is Experimental or Standard Category.

The OD is 10" and SC means Smooth Contour as 51 says. The ID is a bit mysterious. On the tire it is anywhere from 3-1/8" to 3-1/4". On the typical wheel bead seats it is highly tapered...from a big of 3.15" down to 3.05" OD.
Here is a thread discussing the wheels and 10SC stuff.....

No a 10X4.5 will not do....only a 10"SC will do or the Iron curtain one that Desser sells. Unless you use the Russ adapter rings here....

T-6/SNJ/Harvard has a 12.50 SC tire and an equivalent channel tread tire (both obsolete) that is different from the 12-1/2 x 4-1/2 Mustang/T-6/SNJ/Harvard channel tread tire.

Based upon Desser's chart below I don't think they are the same.

10.00 SC 8 PLY OVAL RIB TREAD
Unit Price 135.00
This Rib Tread replaces the smooth and square tires of the past.

10 SC

Thanks for all the replies. Anybody here have actual experience with the Russ rings?

As an aside, I would like to do something similar for the L-5 tail wheel because of the expense and poor quality of the recent 8 SC tires. How are the new 10SC tires holding up?

I do not know of anyone using the Russ adapters. As to the 10SC that Desser sell...they are make in some iron curtain country I don't recall at the moment....Romania, Czech, Hungary...I dunno. They grind the ID's off of them now. I have used one for 10 years....on grass only. I gather they are a soft compound and wear rapidly on hard surface. This is likely a blessing as the old WWII surplus 10SC's are all hard now and they have a real bad habit of spinning on the wheel and cutting the tube nipple(even on grass) if you didn't watch the pressure real close. Something I have had no issue with since using the Desser oval rib (whatever that means).
The 8SC you are referring to....is that the new batch Desser had made up? They had started selling those about last April and are supposed to be faithful to the original. Are these what were not working for you? They were supposed to do the same with the 10SC...likely when the Iron Curtain supply dwindles.
