That photo and another of the same bird appear in Dana Bell's "Air Force Colors, Vol. 2: ETO & MTO 1942-45." The caption reads:
"One of the more unusual aircraft flown by the Army Air Force was this Potez 540, which was used as a flying darkroom by the 15th Photo Mapping Squadron, 3rd Photo Mapping Group, in Junuary, 1943. Although US Wing Stars and crossed national flags have been added, the French camoflage, national markings, and rudder legend were left intact to avoid the impression that this was a prize of war."
And for the record, the French came up with some WAY uglier aircraft than that!

You guys do understand that one of the laws of aerodynamics is that some airplanes are so ugly that they fly because the earth repels them.

Is it me, or does it look like an Auster on steroids...?
