I would say that the plane was hanging off over the side. By piling guy's onto the wing and using it as a lever it picked the gear up over the side so it could be pulled back. Note the block and tackle set up as they are skidding it away from the edge.

They are holding the starboard tip and wheel fast while the gang(see 'em back there pullin') at the tailhook pivot the ship (in a CCW direction when viewed from the heavens) on the wheel that is still on the deck to bring the other main wheel on the deck and the nose will be pointed out over the railing. A reverse type ground loop for the land lubbers out there.
