Interesting side note about the first Ploesti raid. It was led by Col. Addison Baker who was awarded the MoH posthumosly. His son, Ted Baker was an A-26 pilot with the 17th BG (L) at Pusan, Korea. He is the current editor of The Sortie the news letter of the 17th and all affiliated organizations.

Keep the Ploesti stuff rollin. My wifes grandfather flew the later Ploesti missions with the 98th Bomb group. So we are fully interested.

This latest posting brings up a question. Why are there so many pictures of the raid compared to say Franfurt? Is it just perceived or did we take an unusual amount to be used in propaganda? Just wondering.

I think its because it is so recognizable being a low altitude mission with heavies. Most bomber photos were taken up high where there is no geography to connect them to. When you see these photos you quickly make the connection.

Many of you will have found out already, but better safe than sorry (if you want to look up Ploesti with google earth): Ploesti is actually written as Ploiesti.

A bit of film footage:

And there is more.
