The very beginning of this clip shows a 509th B-29 ditching just offshore. I'm wondering if anybody can id the airplane or has any background info on it (I'm going to use the clip as part of a ditching training presentation). It's a beautiful piece of flying.

Really? I always thought the "R" was 509th - ie "Enola Gay".

The 509th's planes carried the tail markings of other units to hide their identity. The real marking for the 509th was an arrow in a circle but it wasn't used until after the atomic attacks.

I have always wondered if the B-29 is still there in the water.

Doubt it. It's to close to the shore. Most likely salvaged pretty quickly after the ditching...
