amazing........ i'm surprised the sand was that compacted to hold that shear weight & forces of take off & landing. notice they did these touch & go's as close to the water as possible where the sand would be at it's most compact.

Cool....Isn't the C-130 the only cargo aircraft of its size that is capable of landing on and taking off an aircraft carrier.

I flew a C-117D Super DC-3 off of Egegik Beach southwest of King Salmon.AK. in the 1981 Alaska Fish Haul.These pictures were taken in July of 1981.I found out quickly that while I didn't have to worry about daylight,the first priority was to get a tide table.The high tide mark was just above where the Doug and the Box are parked in the first picture.These pictures were taken at low tide.You had to be very careful in the wet areas as there were soft spots.In 1980,a DC-6 was lost on this beach when it taxied into a soft area as the tide was coming in and got stuck with soft sand over the top of the brakes.A Ball Brothers Boxcar was lost on this beach in 1979 when the nosewheel sank into a soft spot just before rotation on take-off.The totes of fish broke loose and blew out through the nose below the cockpit.This actually saved the crew because the Boxcar tends to have the cockpit area break off and go inverted as the rest of the airplane runs over it in a belly landing.
