Oliver North's WAR STORIES - Eagle Squadrons

Thu Jun 14, 2007 10:06 pm

Just got this from Steve Pisanos' son -

War Stories Oliver North carried on the Fox News Channel will air this Sunday June 17th at 3:00pm EDT.

This show will be about the Three Eagle Squadrons comprised of American volunteer pilots at the onset of WWII. Steve (The Flying Greek) Pisanos, my father, is interviewed along with other members.

Steve's book "The Flying Greek" is being published by Potomac Books and is scheduled for release December 2007. They are taking advance orders thru their website http://www.potomacbooksinc.com/Books/Su ... spx?id=499

Hope you watch the show, I believe it will air a couple of times.

The Flying Greek web site should be up and running in a few weeks. www.theflyingreek.com

Thanks for the heads up Wade,

One more for the 4th section of my home library.

Now if we'd only get Blakslee to do his book :)

Wade, I got to meet Steve Pisanos through the kind invitation to attend some Eagle Squadron reunions. A nice guy, great story teller and with a good sense of humor. Everyone should read or hear his tales of being shot down, helped by the underground and treated in a German!!!! hospital! Also those guys who claim some super Allison is superior to a Merlin, ought to hear his stories of multiple engine failures resulting in forced landings and bailout while a test pilot trying to make the Allison reliable at high boost and power. After the last one Steve told the engineers "next time you get the bugs worked out, you go up and fly it yourself" and that he was done with that program.

Steve's got to be in his mid-80s, but if you've seen him recently, he could pass for early 60s - am I right?

I've always known Steve was 'around', but never got to meet him. Then, one day a client of mine who's always in the running for top honors at national R/C events (Brian O'Meara of Denver - some of you know him) invited me to their annual event at Chatfield State Park last year. I thought that would be fun, so I made arrangements to go.

Then I find out that their guest speaker was Steve! I got to spend a lot of time talking with him, and then I brought out my prized copy of the 4th FG book, ESCORT TO BERLIN. I have it filled up with 4th FG signatures, and when I asked him to sign it, he immediately agreed. As he was signing, I asked him if he noticed who's name he was signing under ... Don Gentile's sister Edith. As Gentile's best friend in wartime and beyond, he of course knew Edith back in the day ... he looked up and laughed loudly - wondered where the hell I had met her (in Dayton).

Bill - if you want, email me at chicoartist@REMOVETHESECAPSyahoo.com, and I'll put you in touch with his son - what a thrill it would be for Steve to ride in a Spit again (?). That's between you and them, of course, and very easy for me to suggest, but wouldn't that be great?

he was another regular at Wright Field. My father in law met him several times when he came in to check out the P47s he maintained. I'd love to figure out a way to get them in touch, if for nothing more than a phone call.
