A friend west of me about 10 miles has a Stearman still in the crate.
A couple of years ago Skeets Mehrer bought one at Hillsboro that had
sittingi n a hanger for 30 years. After a annual JCW flew it to Skeets place at Camas. They cleaned it up and overhauled the 220 and she flies great.

This might sound like an odd request Jack, but if you ever get a chance I'd love a picture of the crate (I'm assuming it's the original one - I've never seen one). Pics of the plane would be cool, too! :D

It just boggles the mind to hear and see what keeps turning up.

Next time I'm over there I'll take some pictures and get some info.
It's sorta wierd looks at a bare Stearman with no paint, ultra simplistic panel ect. It would almost be a shame to make her fly.

That Stearman just recently went into the Hangar. I know it's been outside for at least the last five years I've been flying out of RHV. I think the most cover it had seen during that period was a tarp.

What's the deal with the sheriff's sale? Owner deceased or MIA or something? I'm sure the airport manager was tired of fending off guys trying to buy it.

Didn't C.T. "Red" Jensen have some still crated Stearmans at Tonopah, NV up until his death? Or was that a warbird urban legend?

I think his FM-2 Wildcat that was also there was the lowest time FM-2 (above water) when it went to a new owner.

Better take a real close look at the wood in those wings before placing your bids. :)

I wouldn't even consider using the original wood, just replace it all with new wing wood kits (the price difference when your finished handily covers the cost, plus the whole safety and peace of mind thing). Of course, you have to factor their costs into your bid.
