Back in the late 70s I became well aquainted with a U.S. Air Force retired RB-66 tail gunner. His last name was Townshend.
He told the story of an RB-66 that had a flame out, and the crew could not get it restarted. The PIC ordered a bail out and the Crew safely ejected. At some point in the ACs descent it apparently restarted ( Compressor start?) and the way it was trimed it flew level and in a long circle.
The Pilot was reported as saying that everytime it flew overhead he could see his rank going away with it.
Now Herb was mostly based in Japan, but; for some reason I have in my mind that this incident took place in England.
Oh, and it was eventually shot down by an F-4.
Ok, now anyone ever hear of this one? I never knew with Herb, but; on the other hand I never knew anyone else that had a Silver Star and an Air Medal for flying during "Peace time".
