Greetings
I was wondering howm many differnt type of Bombers Flew over Japan during WW2 B-25 , B-29, I know of Did any B-17 or B-24's or B-32's ?
Navy TBM's ? or others As always thank you for your input .

Don't know about the others, but B-32s for sure.

A B-32 flew the last combat mission over japan, and the TBM that I used to maintain flew 11 missions over japan.

B-24s from the 11th Air Force (Alaska) carried out both bombing and reconnaissance missions against the Kurile Islands, but not the main islands of Japan.

don't forget navy lockheed pv1 & pv-2 venturas that flew out of the aluitian islands to bomb northern japanese territory islands such as sakhalin island. helldivers bombed japanese home soil as well when the carriers closed in along with the avengers.

the ventura crews had it especially rough.... mostly ocean flying. if they bailed or ditched they were ice cubes within minutes, crash landings in neighboring soviet remote territory wasn't much better.

Interesting chapter in Robert Murray's book on the 54th FS "The Only Way Home", talks about a flight of 4 P38s of the 54th that flew an unauthorized run to a Japanese base in the Kurile Isles to shoot it up.

All 4 made it back, one single engine. It didn't make the official records as it was something the pilots cooked up. They were supposed to be escorting Navy patrol birds, but 'never found them'
