I just got back from a trip to Germany and was driving around Frankfurt at night and saw a C-47 and C-54 lit up along one of the Autobahns. I was lost at the time but I think it was on the A5. Anyone know the story on them?

The C-47 and C-54 by Frankfurt Air Port, are actually where Rhein Main Air Base was. They were part of the Berlin Airlift Memorial. The C-47 had been there for a while, the C-54 was flown in on it's own power some time between 90 and 92, refurbished at Rhein Main and placed on display. I remember the day she flew in and the day they parked there. There was an arch/bridge like sculpture with the aircraft that pointed towards Berlin, there was a copy of the same sculpture in Berlin pointing towards Frankfurt. I have some pictures somewhere around here of the Memorial.

Do you want to find locations of displayed, stored or active aircraft? Then start with the The Locator.
Do you want to find or contribute to the documented history of an aircraft? If so then start with the Airframes Database.
