I mentioned this aircraft the other day, my grandfather was the Ball Turret gunner in this plane. In the book "Big Week" he is in the picture of the plane and its crew. If you look at the picture(I don't have the book in front of me at the moment) he is the very short man in the back row(IIRC).

His name was Harold Lieberman, in an interesting twist he was a jewish man working as a gunner in a plane flying over Nazi Germany, so he got an extra set of dog tags that didn't list him as jewish, and didn't show a jewish last name for when he was flying!

I know there are a few museums both in the US and overseas that use one particular piece of his gun camera footage in a display, its a shot he filmed of another B-17 that had been shot down, and he caught a bit of film of the crew bailing out as the plane spiraled and disintegrated.

That's him top in the center, the short gentleman with the large logo on the jacket. My dad still has the jacket...

My dad was pretty pleased to see these pictures, I'm looking for a model of the General Ike for him to put in his office(upon finding that this plane is in series production as a model, I was pretty happy), but the $175+ entry price for such a piece may be a bit rich for my 16 year old grocery store job self....

I may end up building one of the Revell planes in those colors, but its quite cool that my grandfather's former plane has achieved some notoriety!

I've got the Franklin Mint General Ike and it's super nice. I got it for $99 before they increased their prices.
