Gary Lewis just sent me some interesting photos of B-17G 44-85812, particularly this one showing the ultimate demise of the airplane after it made an emergency landing and burned near Rochelle, GA, on May 8, 1976.

I posted larger photos and some more information about this airplane, actually an ex Coast Guard PB-1G, but this photo was interesting enough that I thought those at WIX would be particularly interested in it. Gary says he heard the tail section was trucked back to Dothan, Alabama, where the airplane was based, and he is trying to track down what eventually happened to it.

See more at http://www.aerovintage.com/b17news.htm.

By the way, the NTSB brief of this accident indicates it suffered a carburetor fire on one of the engines (my guess would be #3), made an emergency landing, and then burnt to this result. Neither of the two pilots were seriously injured, if at all. It was spraying for fire ants at the time.

More details available out there?

Sad, very sad.

The other two ex-Dothan B-17s are still around, however. Today, we know them as Chuckie and Aluminum Overcast.

Cheers!
